Good morning ya 007s,

We’re back for a big 2024…and so is AI messing with our brains. For those of you that swore off Andrew Huberman’s advice after his support of jaw exercise devices…fear not…apparently it was a fake video produced by AI. So jump back into your cold plunge and get your sunlight.

Here’s today’s script:

  • 🤵Bond. Zirconia, Bond. The literature behind bonding the most popular indirect restoration material.

  • ☕Coffee Break. 5 laughable DIY dentistry trends and a politician that gets blasted for not knowing her pediatric eruption patterns.

  • 💵How to Avoid Getting Sued for Clindamycin. Looking forward to next week- we need your thoughts on the controversial antibiotic.

The Name’s Bond, Zirconia Bond

Well well well, aren’t you a well-informed patient…

But, you’re wrong!

2 decades of research and a new protocol developed by Dr. Markus Blatz now promotes bonding zirconia restorations.

It’s call the APC method…which is an acronym worthy of it’s own movie poster.

So here are ABCs of the APC method if you’re itching to implement this into your practice.

Step 1:

With one of these devices….

Using this cast of alumina characters as the microetcher’s ammo…

…which NEED to have a very specific diameter.

…and blasted at a VERY specific pressure👇.

This microetching (or sandblasting) does two things to the crown…

But, here’s an important question…

Do you have a microetcher in your dental practice?

If you don’t have one handy…you can just ask your lab do the sandblasting for you, right?

Right, James??

James is right.

Because bond strength decreases significantly if not bonded within 1 hour after microetching…

So if you REALLY want to move onto the “P” in APC…an in-office microetcher might be a necessity.

Thankfully, it won’t break the bank.

Step 2:

This means coating the intaglio surface of the zirconia crown with this special stuff:

…this is a special phosphate monomer that basically makes the bind between the zirconia and resin cement.

Kinda like this👇

But here’s a super important thing to remember:

Silane priming agents are NOT the same thing as MDP priming agents.

But, some companies DO combine MDP and silane into the same product…

Using priming agents with both MDP and silane is fine…just don’t use silane-only priming agents with zirconia.

Step 3:

And finally…the “C” in APC…cementation with composite cement

Pretty simple. You should use either a…

and that completes the APC acronym of zirconia bonding.

So let’s sum it up

  • ⌛Sandblast with alumina, at under 2 bar, with particles 50 to 60 micrometers in diameter.

  • 💵Buy an in-office microetcher…the research supports it.

  • ⛔Use MDP containing primers. Huge no-go on silane only.

  • 👷‍♂️Use a self-cure or dual-cure cement.

  • 🙏Thank Dr. Blatz for making an easy to remember acronym.
